When Methodist movement founder John Wesley instructed his preachers to use all their time in the work of God, he must have had someone like the Rev. “Guy” Mande Muyombo in mind. Rev. With master’s degrees from both the United Methodist Africa University in Zimbabwe and St. Paul, Rev Muyombo’s goal is to build his fledgling university into a strong institution that will train emerging Congolese leaders in their own land. He is especially intent on empowering and educating women, with his own wife, Blandine, a fellow graduate of Africa University, as a shining example.

The relationship between Highland Park and Rev. Highland Park UMC members Lisa and Mac Tichenor were hosts for some of the choir members, including Rev. Muyombo.

As Lisa and Rev. Muyombo talked, they discovered both had recently lost children. The Tichenors’ son, Willie, died of cancer, and one of the Muyombos’ infant twin daughters died of malaria.

The families kept up communication as the Muyombos moved to Kansas for his theological studies.

While at St. Paul, the Muyombos had another daughter, Christelle, who will be 2 in November.

Many of the region’s children had been captured by rebels and forced to become child soldiers.

Many of the women had been raped and brutalized. Almost no family had escaped unscathed.

In the midst of the brokenness, The United Methodist Church continued to grow and reach out. The church built an orphanage and developed numerous social programs. The first class of theology, psychology and education majors graduated last year. The first class in computer science graduated Oct. 15, along with the second class in the other three disciplines.

University leaders are looking forward to completing the dorm space this month.

“The roofed dorm is a salvation for many students who are struggling to find a place to stay because they are coming from remote areas and villages outside Kamina and in the whole of North Katanga. This is going to help the female students especially and give them a safe space to live,” Rev. Muyombo said.

The completion of the dorm, indeed any building at the university, is cause for celebration. The rural setting has limited road access to cities where materials can be purchased.

Amid the successes, struggles continue. In the last academic year many of the students, especially women, were unable to pay all their tuition and other fees. University leaders decided to let them write their exams in spite of that.

Current needs include more scholarships, classrooms, chairs and desks, plus computers. Tuition and fees for one student are $400 annually.

For survival purposes, I have been relying on small scale farming. This experience has helped me to become the District Agronomist in the North Katanga Area.

One day that I was watching TV, the minister of education argued: “In the present time, all intellectual people without any knowledge of computer sciences are being considered illiterate.” I was in charge of such an important domain of development, that is, agriculture, animal raising and fishing, and I was very much frustrated when I received a computer in my office, and was asked to use it. That is why I finally decided to come back to college, regardless of my age.

There wasn’t any computer technology around in Kamina except at Kamina Methodist University. So this university is worthy of honor because it is the only one in North Katanga which is organizing computer sciences. I would like to thank the people called United Methodists for investing in education even in a rural post conflict setting such as Kamina in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It was not easy to make such a decision to begin studying at the university at my age. I was not given much chance of graduating but I have done it. People were asking me how information technology could be useful in the domain of agronomy.

In addition, this knowledge will help me to better manage my domain, and also to train other agronomists responsible from each territory, i.e. Kamina, Kanyama, Kabongo, Malemba Nkulu and Bukama; how to use computers as a manager.

Since I am studying at this university, my impressions are only positive. Teaching is well organized and we also had a lot of practice every time that we needed it.

When people talked about computers to me for the first time, for me it sounded like magic and I could not even dream on using it one day. But after practice, I realized that everyone could use a computer without any trouble.

My being at this university has also been a kind of sensitizing others, and I will keep on telling people to do as I did, for nothing is difficult when you have hope.

The academic authorities are very respectful people who treat all the students with much care and love.
Kamina Methodist University is bringing peace to the community by training even former child soldiers. This institution needs computers and other library resources necessary for the education of many young men and women. Today I’m proud to be among its first graduates and I’ll always advocate for the liberation of many young men and women who were victims of the civil war and violence we experienced in the DR Congo.

Education is key to bringing peace and development in Kamina, North Katanga, and the DR Congo.

This has been an exciting semester for KMU.

The big news is that we've made great progress on the creation of a modern I.T. lab:

Thanks to a generous donation from our governor, we were able to purchase several new computers.

We are in the process of transforming one of the large (until recently unfinished) buildings near our Lupandilo Nursing School into the primary site of our Information Technology department's computer lab, offices and classrooms.

Our V-Sat antenna should be installed any day now. If all goes to plan, our students and community will have access to high-speed internet (fast enough for video conferencing) by Christmas.

In order for KMU to pay its hefty monthly internet bill, all computer lab users will have to pay to use the center. Our goal is keep this usage fee low so that students can afford to do on-line research and develop a high comfort level with using the internet that can only come from hundreds of hours of practice and exploration. If you are interested in subsidizing the I.T. lab's monthly expenses, please contact our director, Rev. Mande.
